Just seven months before I showed up to help, Ozzie and Lauren had purchased this home and were ready to move in. But not before they reworked their massive backyard, laid flooring in their dining...
Dream Big Little One!
Let it be known – WE HEART OUR CLIENTS! It’s a full-blown love affair over here!
When our client (she was already a couple months pregnant) called and asked if we could help with their nursery, we were super excited! We were also a little nervous. We’ve never done a nursery before and although we had a pretty cute board started on Pinterest, we knew we had a lot to learn. Our client (who was the CUTEST preggers lady ever) and her husband were both working full-time, she teaches barre on the side, he is getting his Masters…these people are busy! At the initial consult, we sat indian style on the floor of the empty room and chatted. What did they think would work for them in the space? What were their expectations? What was the budget? We left with a pretty good idea of the concept – a gender neutral nursery that is comfy, doubles as an office, and plays off the existing green striped walls. Now, where to start?
Since the walls were already painted with bold green stripes, we used that to start our concept boards. Since we hadn’t designed for these clients before, we put together three concepts for them to pick and choose from. The inspiration behind “Dream Big” are bold pops of color, utilizing vintage childhood items, and metallic accents. Our client painted two walls and the ceiling with bold stripes in Behr Celery Bunch. With that as our base, we added 1. West Elm Capiz Orb Pendant $159 2. Zoom Boone Creations Printable Art $5 3. Land of Nod Inch by Inch Chalkboard Growth Chart $59 4. Land of Nod In the Mix Curtain Panel $29 5. All Modern Photo Mobile $19 6. Ikea Potted Plant $15 7. Urban Outfitters Rag Fringe Pillow $69 8. The inspiration behind “You Are My Sunshine” is a Neutral nursery filled with color that functions beautifully. Our client painted two walls and the ceiling with bold stripes in Behr Celery Bunch. With that as our base, we added 1. All Modern Photo Mobile $19 2. Client’s Vintage Norman Rockwell “Life of a Boy/Girl” 3. West Elm Cotton Canvas Etched Grid Curtain $39 4. Land of Nod Metallic Pendant Gardland $30 5. Urban Outfitters Rag Fringe Pillow $69 6. West Elm Capiz Orb Pendant $159 7.Land of Nod Change It Up Changing Table $315 8. So now the question is, which one did they pick!?! Well, truth be told, we ended up bringing all of the parts, of all of the designs, literally into their home and in the meantime found this beautiful “rags to riches” rug at Land of Nod. It really worked with the walls!
Our client had Norman Rockwell prints from her grandmother that we were excited to use. We went to get them professionally framed and couldn’t believe the price! Always thrifting, we purchased two poster frames from ikea, wrapped the cardboard with fabric, and ta-da – custom framed art!
In addition, the client had a light wood desk from college we decided to chalk paint gray. It wasn’t easy! We kept getting brush marks, bugs in the paint, weird colored flecks…AHHhhh! But in the end, it turned out perfect for the space. While we were painting, we took an old bulletin board they had used for table seating at their wedding and gave it a makeover. After a coat of paint and some white polka dots it was the perfect addition to the changing area.
On her own, our client (did we mention the love affair?) took her old ikea magazine racks and hung them on a side wall. Just the spot for displaying books. So cute!
However, the biggest DIY of the room (and something we found on Pinterest that actually worked out great!) is the Ikea-chair-turned-rocker. Part of what we learned while working on this nursery is that a “rocker” or “glider” can get expensive! So much so, that people feel obligated to keep them forever. Ever go to a friend’s house and wonder why the rocker in the living room is so comfy? Ha! So our goal was a reasonably priced rocker, that would still be comfy and that our client’s wouldn’t feel obligated to necessarily keep forever. We followed this very helpful blog post by Interiors by Kenz. Their step-by-step instuctions helped us turn the Ikea Strandmon Chair into the cutest gray rocker!
Then it was off to the races. We kept everything organized in this Pinterest Board. Buy, buy, buy, and as all the pieces came together, Baby D grew and grew. Yay! And sure enough, just as the final touch was done, a healthy baby boy was born. Welcome little Rye to your new home!
