Behind the Scenes of HGTV’s Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge

HGTV’s Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge aired this past Sunday, and I had the honor of being a cast member with a bunch of my HGTV coworkers like Christina Hall, Jonathan Knight, Ty Pennington, and more! I starred in the first episode with Chef Antonia Lofaso from Food Network and we were chosen to compete first against my friends Egypt Sherrod and Mike Jackson from the HGTV show Married to Real Estate.

We were assigned to renovate the kitchen and living room as a real life 1960s-inspired Barbie Dreamhouse. While my typical design style isn’t described as 1960’s Barbie Dreamhouse, this project was a bit of a challenge! I love a good challenge when it comes to designing and building homes, it truly allows creativity and out-of-the-box ideas to shine. While there were a few bumps in the road, this midcentury modern dining room and retro kitchen turned out better than I even imagined! I wanted to really make it feel like a dollhouse—a multifunctional, creative space that ultimately Barbie would love.

I had so much fun choosing everything Barbie-inspired throughout these two rooms, and we even won the competition! Oh, and one of the coolest things about being a part of the Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge was Mattel making me a real life Barbie doll. I never expected to receive anything like this, and my daughter Hazel thought it was hilarious!

Being on the Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge got me thinking about all of the cute items we have at The Shop by Jasmine Roth that are Barbie-inspired. Check out a few of my favorite Barbie-inspired home decor pieces below:

With the anticipation of the premiere of the Barbie movie (coming out on July 21st), I loved being a part of all the Barbie fun and building a real Barbie Dreamhouse. The four-part series of Barbie Dreamhouse Challenge airs Sundays at 8 p.m. on HGTV and is available to stream on Max. As always, thanks for all of the love and support!
