Welcome to the Built Custom Homes Studio
July 20 2026
For those of you who watched this last season of my HGTV show 'HELP! I Wrecked My House', you'll remember I started a BIG project...and never finished it.
I started this renovation back in 2025, when I decided to buy a studio instead of renting a space for my custom home build + design company, Built Custom Homes.
My family and I had recently moved to Utah, and I was rebuilding my business from the ground up—now, quite literally. The building I purchased was completely bare bones and needed to be built out in order to be a functional, workable studio. While we waited for our permits, I started by choosing and ordering all the materials. I wanted the studio to feel warm and welcoming, like an extension of my home. But since it’s a commercial property, I had to make sure I was using extremely durable materials. I snuck in to measure and dream after work most days and even brought the family with me on weekends. They’re good sports because to most people this just looks like a room full of dirt and lumber. Even on vacation in California I brought the kids to the slab yard and we went to pick countertops for the kitchenette. I leaned heavily on trades and suppliers I knew and trusted from other projects. Being able to rely on people is a huge part of my job and I don’t take these relationships for granted. And eventually it all started to take shape! It took way longer than I anticipated, but once drywall was up it started to feel like we might actually work in this studio sooner than later.
The cabinets went in the kitchenette and the tile got installed in the bathroom. It took almost a year to get to this point, which meant I was working from home and meeting clients on the job during that time. It was a big blow to my business, but I didn’t give up. And as the studio progressed, so did the kids! They grew so much during this project. We started to find our footing in our new home, my business demands increased, and support for me finishing this studio had never been higher. Before I knew it, I was getting close to the finishing touches. Choosing blinds, moving in furniture, hanging lights…it all felt surreal after such a long project. But it also felt good to have a dream and see it come to life. I haven’t hung my sign yet, but someday it will hang right here!
Being a business owner is a goal I’ve had since I was a kid. Never could I have imagined the doors it would open for me and the twists and turns my career would take. I hope this story is encouraging for even one person who is thinking of jumping in with both feet but scared how it might go. I say GO FOR IT!
