Okay, you’ve decided to renovate and the next step is hiring a contractor.  I always recommend finding a contractor via referral.  Ask your neighbors, your friends, and even online referrals/reviews can be helpful.  Once you land on a contractor you think might be “the one,” here’s what I recommend are the 3 things to ask your general contractor before starting a project

3 Things to Ask Your General Contractor Before Starting a Project

QUESTION 1

Are you licensed and insured?  This might seem a little formal, but this is the first thing you need to ask.  Also, you need to clarify that their license is current in the city you’re doing work in.  This is also a great time to discuss how they will handle the permitting process.

QUESTION 2

What’s their process for communicating progress?  Go into this question knowing that you want them to lay out a clear plan, including daily meetings and email updates.  If they don’t have a quick and clear answer to this question – THAT’S A RED FLAG!

QUESTION 3

How do you handle change orders?  And this is an important one, you guys!  No matter how decisive you think you are, you will make changes as the project moves forward.  Having a conversation EARLY in the process, to understand how these changes will be approached, is very important.

  • Your advice to confirm a contractor’s license is legitimate in the city where the work is being done is useful. I could use your advice since I’ve been looking for a contractor to build the custom houses of my dreams here in my home town. Am hoping that what you suggested would help me discover a reliable general contractor.

  • My family and I are looking for a contractor to fix the siding on our house, but we haven’t been successful in finding one yet. This website was discovered during our quest for further details. That you suggested verifying the contractor’s insurance and licensing to ensure that the business could pay any damages suffered throughout the replacement process is wonderful advice. We’ll have this in mind while we look for a siding contractor because it seems like great advice. Thanks.

  • It’s beneficial that you mentioned how crucial it is to inquire about the contractor’s license and insurance upfront because doing so will make it clear whether they are qualified to complete the work. I suppose it would be beneficial to have an industrial general contractor explain things to you and manage the project if the building was required for your industrial facility. In the future, if I ever need to hire an industrial general contractor, I’ll keep this in mind.

  • I found it useful when you told us to lay out a clear plan when it comes to communicating the progress with the contractor, such as daily meetings or email updates. I’m thinking of having a house of my own built this year, so I need a general contractor to oversee the entire project. I’ll be sure to properly set a time for meetings once I find a general contractor to hire soon.

  • To maintain the gutters at home, I’ve been looking for a contractor, but up until I arrived here, I couldn’t manage to find one. It’s fantastic that you suggested verifying the potential general contractor’s insurance and licensing status so that, in the event of a problem, the company may make up for the loss. As I search for a general contractor, I’ll keep this great tip in mind. Thanks.

  • It’s incredibly helpful that you said that you should make sure a contractor’s license is valid in the city where the job is being done. I’ve been searching for a contractor for my dream solar patio installation here in my townhouse, so I could use this guidance. Just hoping I can find a good general contractor with everything you said.

  • It’s good that you brought up how important it is to ask the contractor first if they’re licensed and insured since this will help clarify if they’re authorized to do the job. I imagine if there is construction needed for your industrial plant, it would help to have an industrial general contractor explain things to you and oversee the project. I’ll keep this in mind in case I ever need to hire an industrial general contractor in the future.

  • I’m searching for a contractor to repair the siding on my house with my family, but I haven’t been able to find one so far. Our search for further information led us to this site. It’s fantastic that you advised making sure the contractor is insured and licensed so that the company could cover any losses incurred during the replacement process. This appears to be a sound advice, and we’ll have that in mind while we search for a siding contractor. Thanks.

  • My employer and I are searching for a contractor to construct a concrete barrier near our firm’s site, but we haven’t been able to find one until we read these helpful advice on your website. The suggestion of asking potential contractors about their license and insurance coverage is a wonderful one since it ensures that if something goes wrong during the project, the firm will be able to handle any resulting financial loss. This looks like a really helpful advice, and we’ll definitely have that in mind while we search for a general contractor. Thanks.
